One Hell of a Year

The title says it all 2016 was an incredible year! Before I get into what happened and how ridiculously great it was, I want to thank all of my amazing clients for trusting me to capture their wedding!

To start January 11th 2016 was the day that Julia and I moved to Seattle all the way from Chicago. Well technically Julia's dad, Jim, and I drove across the country for an entire week of sightseeing. Julia still had to wrap up one final week of work back in Chicago, so she flew in Friday night. Jim and I managed to drop off the U Haul at the new apartment, grab a pizza and we went out to the airport to pick her up. The plan worked out perfectly (except for that deer we hit in South Dakota)!

All our adventures began as soon as we moved out to Seattle! This place is incredible, and we ducked out for a hike every chance we got. I've honestly lost count, we've done so many this year.

Then wedding season kicked in and the traveling started. I've been to 2 countries, and 13 different states all to photograph people in the places they love. That means 15,000 miles have been put on my car and I've hit just under 30,000 on my frequent flyer card.

In the middle of all the craziness of wedding season we bought our first house in West Seattle!

Here are a few of my favorite shots from the year!

San Francisco Engagement with Emily and Jon

How can you say no when you get a call to travel to San Francisco to shoot one crazy adventure filled engagement session! Well after talking over locations with Emily and Jon, we decided to go all out! We started with a sunrise shoot right at Sutro Baths, with a walk over to Lands End. We then met back up to head over to Marshall's Beach for sunset. This was not only one of my favorite engagement sessions ever, it was also the most gorgeous sunsets I've ever had for a photoshoot!

That's not all, check out the bottom of the post for a surprise ending!

After the engagement session I was also able to go out to Golden Gate National Recreation Area to grab some landscapes.

There I was on the side of the road taking cityscapes of downtown San Francisco. A couple had spotted my camera equipment and they end up starting a conversation. It turns out they had just got married at city hall earlier that day! They asked if I could take a photo of the two of them, and we ended up with this beautiful portrait of them silhouetted against the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Fran Skyline!

Mt Rainier Engagement with Grace and Tai

Grace and Tai were dying to get out into the mountains for their engagement shoot. Of course I couldn't have been more excited too! I went out to Mt Rainier National park and found the perfect locations for us to get some amazing views of the mountains and go adventuring for sunset. They met me out at Reflection Lake and we wandered around from there.

Destination - Key West, FL with Lauren and Phil

I can't believe that my first 7 photoshoots this year were all travel and destination weddings! Literally from British Columbia to Mexico and almost everything in between. Lauren and Phil's wedding is one of my all time favorites! They brought me out to Key West, Florida for one gorgeous weekend filled with exploring, adventures, alligators, swamps and of course one hell of a wedding. It may have been 90 degrees out, but we didn't let that stop us from getting some incredible portraits throughout Key West.

Whenever I'm traveling for weddings I always try and do something fun to check out the local scenery. For Lauren and Phil's wedding I wanted to finally see Everglades National Park and Big Cypress National Preserve but I only had a short window of time to make it happen. So after I wrapped up their wedding I got about 2 hours of sleep and woke up at 2:30am and drove straight to the Everglades to catch sunrise. After that craziness I went out to Big Cypress to hike through some swamp land and find some alligators to photograph. See the end of the blog post to check out the photos!
