As soon as I met with Derek and Kyler they were talking about all the traveling and adventures that they're constantly going on. So naturally when it came to their engagement session we choose an unbelievable vantage point of Mt Rainier. As soon as we saw an opening in the summer wildfire smoke we ran out to Mt Rainier National Park hiked up to High Rock where there is an incredible fire lookout cabin. Just when we got to the top clouds rolled in, but this time they added an extra bit of drama without the rain!
The title says it all 2016 was an incredible year! Before I get into what happened and how ridiculously great it was, I want to thank all of my amazing clients for trusting me to capture their wedding!
To start January 11th 2016 was the day that Julia and I moved to Seattle all the way from Chicago. Well technically Julia's dad, Jim, and I drove across the country for an entire week of sightseeing. Julia still had to wrap up one final week of work back in Chicago, so she flew in Friday night. Jim and I managed to drop off the U Haul at the new apartment, grab a pizza and we went out to the airport to pick her up. The plan worked out perfectly (except for that deer we hit in South Dakota)!
All our adventures began as soon as we moved out to Seattle! This place is incredible, and we ducked out for a hike every chance we got. I've honestly lost count, we've done so many this year.
Then wedding season kicked in and the traveling started. I've been to 2 countries, and 13 different states all to photograph people in the places they love. That means 15,000 miles have been put on my car and I've hit just under 30,000 on my frequent flyer card.
Here are a few of my favorite shots from the year!
There's so much I love about Ashley and Alex's engagement session that I don't even know where to start! This was simply the perfect shoot in every way. Julia and I drove down to Cape Kiwanda on the coast of Oregon. We spent the whole day walking the beach with our dog Lily and hiking around. Then we grabbed some burgers and laid out on the beach until it was photoshoot time.
As soon as Ashley and Alex arrived the sun was getting into that perfect spot. The one where you know that every photo is going to turn out just right. That every inch of the landscape is going to glow. The rest of the shoot the light only got better and better. It doesn't just take the right light in the right place to create meaningful photographs. Ashley and Alex had way of connecting in front of the camera that worked so well. See everything below!
I cannot wait for Lauren and Phil's wedding. They're getting married in the Florida Keys and it's going to be one hell of a great time! Until then, here's some of my favorites from their engagement session in Indiana Dunes State Park. That's right, Indiana has some incredible photogenic sand dunes and some great views of Lake Michigan.
